Senseroid

Ever just need a hug? A student at the University of Electro-Communications in Japan has created the ‘Sense-Roid’, a robotic device that when hugged, will hug you back.

The hugging robot looks like a tailor’s mannequin with silicon skin and wears a special jacket. The user would also wear a special jacket. When the two articles of clothing, which are filled with pressure sensors, connect, they inflate with air and vibrate, simulating a real hug.

It also mimics the pressure from the user’s hug, so in a way, hugging it is like hugging yourself, detecting the precise nature of the hug with micro switch sensors, then reciprocates in real-time. The Sense-Roid is a prototype and there are no plans to make more, so don’t plan on relying on the Sense-Roid for your emotional comfort anytime soon!
